French authorities will start intercepting migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure

French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French police have rarely acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.

"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.

Significantly, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the boats.

The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left office.

This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.

Now French officials will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
